LEWISTON — Lewiston High School’s annual induction ceremony for the National Honor Society was held on March 7 at Lewiston High School. Fifty-five students were inducted into the school’s chapter.
Newly inducted junior Arissa Shaw sang the national anthem. Senior NHS President Maria D’Auria was master of ceremonies, along with support from NHS officers Eric Hall, Maggie Phelan and Gabriel Jacques.
“NHS is more than just an honor roll,” Principal Shawn Chabot said. “Academic achievement is a core component of NHS, but today’s students need much more than just good grades to get ahead.
“NHS’s focus on service, leadership and character helps students build the skills and relationships that will ensure success throughout their academic years and beyond,” he said.
NHS adviser Michelle Crowley asked students to consider their legacies and whether they would be remembered as a force for positivity among their peers, within their families, in their community and in the world.
Seniors previously inducted to NHS were then presented with honorary stoles to wear at graduation.
To be eligible for membership consideration, students must have a cumulative GPA of 90. Additionally, candidates must meet high standards of service, leadership and character.
Leadership is based on the student’s participation in two or more community or school activities, or election to an office.
To meet the service requirement, the student must have been active in service projects in the school and community.
Character is measured in terms of integrity, behavior, ethics and cooperation with both students and faculty.
A faculty council consisting of three members of the faculty reviews students’ applications.
As members of NHS, these students will now engage in a number of individual and chapter service projects.
