This is in response to Charles Clark’s letter “GOP senators should do their job” (March 19).
I guess I missed Clark’s first letter complaining when Sen. Joe Biden made his speech before the Senate on June 25, 1992 stating that there should be no confirmation hearings because it was an election year. On second thought, maybe I didn’t miss his earlier letter because it was never written in the first place.
The hypocrisy this year seems to be unparalleled and Clark appears to be a card-carrying member of the exclusive club that believes “What is good for the goose is not good for the gander.”
While there are a few (some journalists included) who would say that Sen. Biden was referring only to confirmations made at the end of summer, or in the fall, it is my belief that, given the political hostility in Washington today, it is appropriate to wait on that nomination now, never mind this summer or this fall.
Contrary to Clark’s wishes, I do hope the GOP holds its ground and defers the nomination hearings until after a new president is elected, whoever that may be.
