BETHEL — The Mahoosuc Land Trust is inviting residents to participate in a guided walk at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, on the Valentine Farm, 162 North Road.

Participants will view the mating dances of the American woodcock, member Jolan Ippolito said.

Paul Motts, who recently retired as a National Park Service naturalist, will guide participants through the walk.

“A small flashlight is recommended, and it is best to wear warm dark clothing,” Ippolito said. “The program is expected to go until 8:15 p.m., and all ages are welcome.”

Ippolito said the American woodcock typically returns to Maine in the spring, and “just after twilight.” The male American woodcock performs a three-part mating dance.

“Woodcocks are among the slowest of fliers, so they are easy to spot and typically land in the very spot where they took off,” Ippolito said. “At one program, they were so precise that they landed on someone’s wool hat.”

People may preregister for the event by visiting the Mahoosuc Land Trust website, or by calling 207-824-3806.
