Garments of Praise

PARIS — Garments of Praise is reopening at South Paris Baptist Church, 1 Park St.

New hours will be 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays starting April 2. Inventory includes spring and summer gently used clothing.

Donations of clothing will be accepted at the church along with donations to benefit the local food bank.

AUGUSTA — Disabled anglers from the nonprofit group Back In The Maine Stream will host a seminar called, “Adaptive angling techniques for the disabled angler.”

The free seminar teaches disabled anglers how to adapt, overcome, and get back into fly fishing at The Maine Sportsman’s Show at the Augusta Civic Center held April 1 through 3. Seminar times are 11 a.m. Saturday, April 2, and noon on Sunday, April 3.

Disabled veterans from BITMS are dedicated to helping other disabled veterans get back into fly fishing, and have a few tips and techniques to help disabled anglers overcome, adapt, and get back on the water and fish. This seminar will also help inform fishing guides how to adapt to disabled anglers.

Also, at the show, veterans with a service-connected disability of 10 percent or more who like fly fishing can join BITMS.

Electronics drop-off

PARIS — The Kiwanis Club of Norway-Paris will hold an electronics recycling drop-off fundraiser from9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 30, in the parking lot at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School.

The Kiwanis Club of Norway-Paris and eWaste Recycling Solutions are partnering to respond to the community’s need for recycling electronic devices by hosting the free drop off.

It is an opportunity for residents to responsibly dispose of obsolete electronics like televisions, monitors, computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, scanners, stereos, cameras, speakers, microwaves, cell phones typewriters and calculators.

In lieu of a disposal fee, donations will be accepted for the Kiwanis club.

BRYANT POND — The Whitman Memorial Library will host a social hour at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 7.

Those attending should bring their own games or participate in the popular coloring fad. Coloring supplies will be provided. Cards and a cribbage board will be available.

There is no charge, and light refreshments will be served.

NAMI 

PARIS — NAMI Maine and its local Western Mountain affiliate are offering NAMI’s free Family to Family education course for families and friends of persons living with mental illness at the University College Center.

It starts Thursday, April 7, and will run from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays until June 23.

Participants will learn about mental illnesses, treatments and therapies, communication and coping skills, advocacy, resources, self-care for caregivers and much more.

Bread making

NORWAY — Stephens Memorial Hospital will offer a class in bread-making basics for people seeking simple, healthy recipes for delicious homemade bread. 

The course will be instructed by Sarah Carter Hill, the Community Nutrition Educator for SNAP-Ed with University of New England and Program Coordinator at Healthy Oxford Hills, a project of Stephens Memorial Hospital.

This session will meet from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, at the Harper Conference Center in the Ripley Medical Office Building. The program is free, but registration is required.

Better Health

NORWAY — Stephens Memorial Hospital and the MaineHealth Learning Resource Center will offer Living Well for Better Health. This is a nationally recognized, interactive workshop series held for two hours weekly for six weeks.

Adults with health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, depression, weight concerns, or any other ongoing health problem can attend. Family members or friends are encouraged to attend as well.

Robin Green, LSCW, and Sharon Nightingale will teach new ways to deal with issues such as fatigue, pain, anxious feelings, sadness or depression.

Participants will learn appropriate exercises for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility and endurance, how to eat healthier, how to evaluate new treatments, how to be a member of their own healthcare team, how to set goals, plan for the future and more. Coffee and muffins will be provided.

Arthritis 

NORWAY — Stephens Memorial Hospital will offer the workshop Living with Arthritis.

Participants will learn strategies to manage arthritis of hands, hips, knees and more.

Occupational therapists and physical therapists from Stephens Memorial Hospital will teach exercises and joint protection strategies to help move better and with less pain. A light refreshment will be provided.

Seeking volunteers

AUGUSTA — Cycling for healthy air for more than 31 years, the Trek Across Maine attracts nearly 2,000 cyclists and 750 volunteers. This three-day trek takes cyclists 180 miles from Sunday River to the sea in Belfast. The Trek Across Maine is the largest fundraiser of its kind for the American Lung Association nationwide.

The Trek is seeking volunteers to assist on Father’s Day weekend from Friday to Sunday, June 17 to 19.

Trek volunteers bring a wide array of talents, energy and fun to the annual events that support the American Lung Association’s mission to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease.

Yard sale

Indoor sale

PARIS — An indoor sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at American Legion Post 72, 12 Church St.

The lunch counter will be open, and a 50/50 raffle will be held.

Proceeds will help the Ladies Auxiliary send three young girls to Girls State.

ORONO — University of Maine Cooperative Extension will offer training sessions to those interested in identifying and recording seasonal changes in their communities in support of understanding Maine’s changing climate.

YardScaping

PARIS — “YardScaping for a Healthy Maine” will be the Wednesday, April 6, topic for the final lecture in the McLaughlin Garden series.

Megan Patterson and Anne Chamberlain will represent YardScaping, a Partnership of the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry with the Board of Pesticides Control.

YardScaping hopes to inspire Maine people to create and maintain healthy landscapes through ecologically based practices that minimize reliance on water, fertilizer and pesticides.

Tea will be served beginning at 3:30 p.m., with the lecture scheduled at4 p.m. It will be held upstairs in the historic Tribou home at 97 Main St., where Bernard McLaughlin lived with his wife.

Both tea and the lecture are free and open to the public, although donations will be requested for the preservation of the buildings and garden. The garden’s gift shop will be open.

Yard sale

PARIS — An inside-outside yard sale will be held Saturday, May 7, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at VFW Post 9787 on 68 East Main Street in South Paris.  Tables are $10 each and if you are interested, please call 743-5723. The lunch counter will also be open.

Texas Hold’em

HARRISON – The Harrison Lions Club will be holding their Texas Hold’em Tournament on Saturday, April 2 at the VFW Hall on Waterford Road in Harrison. There will be a $55 entry fee. Doors open at 12 p.m. with a starting time of 1 p.m. This is a BYOB event with great food and refreshments available. The proceeds will be used to help support local children programs such as eye screening for school age children, Christmas for kids and scholarships. Remember, you can not win if you don’t play!
