AUBURN — Five people were rousted from their homes Friday night when an third-floor apartment went up in flames on Academy Street.

Nobody was hurt in the 7:30 p.m. blaze, but the third-floor apartment at 81 Academy St. was damaged by fire and water as crews doused the flames.

“I saw a few flames in the top-story window, but that was about all,” said David Bartlett, who lives next door to the three-story apartment house. “The firefighters got it down real quick.”

One person was inside the apartment where the fire started, police said, but he got out of the building without injury.

Firefighters working from ladders attacked the flames through the windows, putting the fire down within minutes of arrival.

Heidi Robinson and Cat Costello live on the first floor and arrived just as fire crews were getting the blaze under control.

“We had just pulled up,” Robinson said. “We saw some flames shooting out and then it was over.”

Five people live in the building, Robinson said. The tenants from the lower floors were expected to return to their apartments once firefighters cleared. The cause of the fire was being investigated later Friday night.
