YORK — State police made two separate arrests on the turnpike Friday, seizing 480 doses of suspected heroin bound for southern Maine.

Jorge Medina, 36, of Sanford was charged with aggravated trafficking in heroin and Leah Thurlow, 59, of Old Orchard Beach was charged with aggravated trafficking in heroin and violating conditions of release, Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said in news release.

McCausland said police received a tip that Medina would be traveling to Massachusetts to pick up a large amount of heroin to sell in the Sanford area.

He was a passenger in a vehicle heading back to Maine when the car was stopped at 6:30 p.m. Using a drug-sniffing dog, police found 32 grams, or 320 doses, of suspected heroin, 4 grams of crack cocaine and 4 grams of cocaine hydrochloride. The drugs had an approximate street value of $6,000.

Medina was arrested and taken to York County Jail.

While in the midst of Medina’s search and arrest, police saw and stopped Thurlow’s vehicle. McCausland said she’d been arrested last month for bringing in heroin to sell from Massachusetts. Police searched her car and found 16 grams, or 160 doses, of suspected heroin, and she was also brought to York County Jail.
