I am an inmate at Androscoggin County Jail. My concern is the issue of earning good time. Inmates can earn “good time” for doing various jobs, but the amount of time one can earn is very limited. I am hoping that Gov. LePage would do something to allow more jobs so inmates can earn more good time.
It costs a lot to house an inmate — food, water, hygiene … on and on. We eat and sleep — that is about all we can do — and that costs a lot of money. I would like to see inmates on work crews, fixing up the city, picking up trash, painting, etc. We could be doing things to help out while working our way out of here.
I have heard that the jails are overcrowded. Why isn’t anyone doing something about it? Some of us want to better ourselves.
Things need to change. Give more good time, ankle bracelets, form work crews. If the governor and other elected officials want to do something about the overcrowding, they need to take action.
People may look the other way, but for many it is only a matter of time before someone they know or care about is in here. Total up how many people are in, or have been in — that’s a good chunk of Maine already.
