WATERVILLE — More than 500 juniors and seniors around Maine gathered at Thomas College for the Jobs for Maine Graduates annual Career Development Conference on March 29.

Students spent the day battling it out in a variety of college and career skills competitions, proving they are ready for life after graduation.

“I’ve never been to CDC before, so I really didn’t know what to expect,” said Benjamin Doyle, a senior at Lewiston High School. “But being here at Thomas and meeting other JMG students from all over Maine has been an awesome experience.”

For the first time in the event’s 24-year history, CDC was held on a college campus. This offered new opportunities for students to explore the college experience while having fun. They were sent across campus on a scavenger hunt based on skills they will need to succeed in college. Participants submitted college applications and did their best to impress admissions staff in mock interviews.

Students squared off in public speaking competitions, showed off their science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills by building mobile mini-robots and received the chance to network with employers and college representatives at the event’s Career Expo. More than 100 people, including business executives, community leaders and Thomas College staff, generously volunteered their time and energy to facilitate workshops and judge competitions.

“I really have no words to describe this day. It was spectacular,” said Honey Shueyb, a senior at Lewiston High School. “I’ve met so many people, everyone with very positive attitudes about their future. And, getting the chance to take part in these competitions has really boosted my confidence. I’m so excited about life after high school.”

JMG is a statewide, private nonprofit that works with students who face barriers to education. JMG provides 5,500 students a year with the skills and experience they will need to succeed in high school, postsecondary education and careers.
