DEAR SUN SPOTS: My wife and I loved watching the show “Yankee Jungle” about the owners and animals of the DEW Haven animal sanctuary in Mount Vernon that appeared on the Animal Planet (channel 69 on cable). It was only on a couple of weeks this season, then, without notice, it disappeared. We can’t even find it on “On Demand.” We were wondering if you could find out what happened?

Also, Anderson Cooper is Gloria Vanderbult’s son. Why did he change his name? Thanks in advance. — Wondering, Peru.

ANSWER: “Yankee Jungle” joins a growing list of reality television shows that have found themselves canceled after controversies ignited over their alleged treatment of the animals they feature. According to published reports, Animal Planet opted to cancel the show due to “new programming decisions at the network,” but only after the family-owned zoo was the subject of much public scrutiny and backlash for supposed decades of animal welfare violations. The animal sanctuary’s owners have outright denied the allegations, however, saying that their mission is the same as it has been since they opened it 1980 — “to provide a safe haven for animals, and to promote society’s education regarding their wellness, respect and conservation.” What all of this means for viewers like you is that you will not be able to look forward to new episodes of the show and they are unlikely to appear on “On Demand” any time soon either.

As for Anderson Cooper, while it’s quite common for celebrities to use “stage names,” such is not the case for the television news anchor. In fact, Gloria Laura Vanderbilt is a maiden name. Her fourth husband, Wyatt Emory Cooper, is Anderson Hays Cooper’s father. Anderson Cooper is actually his given name.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I found a pin with the insignia “Central Maine Vocational Institute.” Someone with the initials “L.M.N.” graduated as an RN. The school has no follow-up, but their records show that only one person with those initials graduated from there while the school operated under that name. I’d like this pin to go back to its owner. If you can help, please leave a message at (207) 846-4742. Thank you. — Wahneta, Yarmouth.

ANSWER: Sun Spots readers, this is a reprint with a corrected phone number. Help spread the word and reunite this graduate with his or her pin. Thank you.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: For the reader looking for input on cutting subscription costs for cable, we have had antenna cable for many years. We pay under $20 a month for approximately 22 channels, which gives us all the locals. — John, No Town.
