We applaud the Auburn teachers who spoke before the Auburn School Committee April 6. We appreciate the professionalism they displayed in presenting their concerns to the committee members. They gave voice to the data provided in the recent employee survey, and they initiated a very important, yet difficult, conversation. We admire their courage.

Our five children have attended Auburn public schools during the past 20 years. On balance, we would say they have all received a first-rate education. The three oldest have attended and thrived at competitive private colleges, and the two youngest will graduate from ELHS next spring. We believe they, too, will be well prepared for the next phase of their education.

As we look at new models to better position ourselves for future success, we must remember to actively seek input from our teachers and students. It is in the classroom that all the models, theories and approaches are actually applied.

Human nature sometimes leads us to seek black and white solutions — to believe that we are either for or against — and to identify the right approach from the wrong. But perhaps the best result exists somewhere in the middle, honoring and building upon the assets that already exist.

We are hopeful that the elected officials on the School Committee will help facilitate a productive dialogue going forward, and that they will model the core values of respect and responsibility that are the hallmark of our schools.
