PARIS — A Facebook page has been created to spark interest in the upcoming 50th anniversary of the Viking Choir and other specialty musical groups created by former School Administrative District 17 music teacher Cynthia Wescott.
“A little more than 50 years ago Cynthia Wescott came to Oxford Hills (School District) to teach music. She wasn’t even named Wescott yet, because she got married after she began teaching here,” said Nancy Marcotte.
“It was a new school district and the first Oxford Hills High School building was still under construction. She created the Viking Choir and later Vikettes and Viking Voices specialty groups. Music teachers who followed her included Sarah Johnson and Dennis Boyd Jr. and they created audition show choirs as well.”
On Saturday, June 18, members of all of these groups will gather at the school for a public performance and celebration of the 50th anniversary. The group will include many who went on to professional musical careers.
Planning for the performance is currently underway. It will include several guest conductors and favorite tunes of the past, including songs from Broadway shows, which Wescott began producing at the school in 1974, Marcotte said.
The next planning meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 28, in art room C101 at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School. Everyone is welcome.
