NEWRY — Maine Mineral & Gem Museum’s first Mineralogical Heritage Awards will be held Friday, May 6, at Sunday River Resort’s Grand Summit Hotel in Newry in conjunction with the New England Mineral Conference.

The awards, set to be distributed annually, celebrate the sciences and arts integral to the museum’s mission: to communicate the significance of minerals in lives, the planet and beyond.

Honorees demonstrate advanced application and significant influence on the science and processes inherent in mining, collecting, crafting, educating and communicating the relevance of minerals.

Inductees are selected by democratic voting by the Awards Committee with a total of three named each year; recipients may be named posthumously.

A buffet-style dinner will be served from 5 to 6:45 p.m. Cost is $30 and includes the event and dinner.
