Girls State sponsorship offered
RUMFORD — The Rumford American Legion Auxiliary will accept applications from Mountain Valley High School female students interested in politics and government for sponsorship to attend Dirigo Girls State.
Girls State is a non-partisan opportunity for high school juniors to learn about responsible citizenship in a democratic society. The program is a government simulation in which delegates role play campaigns and hold elections for local, county and state government.
The program takes place at Husson University in Bangor from June 19 to 24.

Oxford Historical Society to meet
OXFORD — The Oxford Historical Society will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, at the Kay House Museum and Oxford Historical Society, 73 Pleasant St.
The guest speaker will be Register of Deeds Patricia Shearman of the Oxford County Registry of Deeds. She will share information on how to use the Registry of Deeds for genealogical research.
The public is welcome at no charge. The Society will also collect the 2016 annual dues. New members are welcome to join for a $5 annual membership fee.
Democrats to hold campaign kickoff
PARIS — The Oxford County Democrats will hold a 2016 campaign kickoff on Wednesday, April 27, at the First Congregational Church.
The event will begin with social time at 5 p.m. and dinner at 5:30 p.m., followed by a program.
The program will feature remarks by Bangor Daily News blogger Mike Tipping of the Maine People’s Alliance, as well as by former state Sen. Emily Cain of Orono, candidate for Maine’s 2nd Congressional District. Candidates for the legislature and county offices in Oxford County will be in attendance.
The menu will include chicken and fixings, a vegetarian quiche option and dessert. Tickets for the event cost $10 per person or $8 for students and seniors. They may be reserved by calling 207-875-2116 or emailing [email protected].

Into the Woods speaker series
BETHEL — The Mahoosuc Land Trust’s April “Into the Woods” speaker series will feature members of Mahoosuc Mountain Rescue Team, a volunteer group that assists the Maine Warden Service in solving incidents and accidents.
Bob Baribeau, Chris Hayward and Dan Elliott will present aspects of their work at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, in McLaughin Auditorium at Gould Academy.
This event is free and open to the public.
Poetry group resumes, studying style
RUMFORD — The Fourth Thursday Poetry Group will resume meeting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 28, in the public room of the Rumford Public Library.
Refreshments and social time are first on the agenda, and then participants will read poetry they’ve written or from their favorite works by other poets.
There will be a twist on the program: studying poetic forms and styles.
The gathering is sponsored by Friends of the Rumford Library.

Daughters to meet April 28
NORWAY — The Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865 Hannah F. Richardson Tent 19, Stoneham, met March 30 at the home of Marilyn Jones in Norway.
The charter was draped in memory of past National President Iren Berg, who recently passed away.
Installation was held for those were absent at the previous meeting.
The daughters called “sister” Wanda Ryerson, a past president who now lives in South Carolina, to wish her a happy birthday.
The next meeting is Thursday, April 28, at the same location.
‘Egg-citing’ times at Library
WATERFORD — The Waterford Library held its annual Easter Egg Hunt on March 26, and 45 children took part.
Volunteer Marion Brennen filled 600 plastic eggs with candy for the event. Other volunteers filled an additional 250, for a total of 850 eggs.
As egg hunters left, they were all given a free book from the Waterford Library.
