The Roll-Away was one of the gayest places in Lewiston, Monday evening, when D. O. Chapman gave a big masquerade party. From eight to nine, about fifty masked skaters in costumes, gay, gorgeous and grotesque, rolled merrily over the floor before the amused or admiring eyes of the crowd of onlookers. Here one saw strangely assorted couples . . . a Turkish lady of high degree with a stock baseball player; a dignified Colonial gentleman and a flower girl, garlanded with roses and swinging a basket of blossoms.
50 years ago, 1966
(Photo Caption) Construction of an addition to Walton Junior High School in New Auburn is underway. The expansion will provide the school with four additional classrooms, a multi-purpose room, kitchen, shop area, and allied facilities. Part of the foundation for the addition can be seen as forms stand ready for more concrete.
25 years ago, 1991
Once again the Social Learning Center, 984 Sabattus St., Lewiston, will open its doors to the public for a sale of products made by employees. The organization is proud of the professional quality of its goods this spring and has arranged to be open later into the evening. Products for sale are planter baskets, patio benches, candle holders, wind chimes, refrigerator magnets, Maine-ly scented incense, scented potpourri hangers, pillows, bookends and wall hangings. Fresh-baked muffins and cupcakes will also be for sale. Employees and staff will be available to provide information concerning the services the Social Learning Center offers to the community. The center trains developmentally challenged adults to live and work independently.
