LEWISTON — SeniorsPlus Education Center has announced its May programming. All classes, which require registration, are free unless noted, and are held at 8 Falcon Road. The center is accessible. Hearing assistive equipment is available. 

Consumer Fraud Protection: 10 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 10, with Alan Elze, Retired, All-Round Informed Delight. Participants will learn about recourse available.

Basic Medicare: 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, with Debra Cartwright, SeniorsPlus. The course will cover the basics and timelines of this complex system, when to sign up for what, and ways to save money.

What’s New in the World of iPhones and iPads: 10 a.m. to noon or 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, May 12, with Jill Spencer, BoomerTECH partner. The course will review updates and problem solve issues you might have. Participants should bring a fully charged iPhone or iPad.

Being Safe at Home: 1 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, with Kathy Adams, Maine CITE Program director. Participants will learn about options that make it easier to live independently and safely, such as medical alert systems, medication reminders and home safety aides. Information on Maine resources and funding will be shared.

AARP Smart Driver: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, with Court Dwyer of AARP. Drivers 55 and older who complete this class are eligible for discounts on their auto insurance for three years. The cost is $20 payable to AARP or $15 for AARP Members.

Alzheimer’s Disease: Know the Ten Signs: 1 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, May 26, with Peter Baker, LMSW, manager of helpline services, Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter. This class is also offered via Web-Ex at two additional locations, West Paris Public Library, 226 Main St., and SeniorsPlus Farmington, 218 Fairbanks Road. Participants will learn how to tell the difference between Alzheimer’s and typical aging, steps to take if recognizing a warning sign, the process to receiving an Alzheimer’s diagnosis and why early detection is crucial.

On-Going Programs

Gentle Morning Chair Yoga for Seniors: 9 to 10 a.m. Mondays through May 23 with Tisha Bremner, Inner Light Yoga of Maine. Designed to increase vitality, gain a deeper sense of balance and find inner calm. Combines meditation, easy warm-ups, light stretches and gentle yoga postures. Cost is $8 per drop-in class.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction: 3 to 4 p.m. Thursdays through June 2 with Tisha Bremner. This class will focus on mindfulness-based stress reduction using breath awareness, guided imagery, relaxation and meditation techniques. Cost is $8 per drop-in class.

Advanced Strength and Balance Training: 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. Mondays (there will not be class on May 30) and from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Fridays with Linn Morin, certified trainer. Participants will move to music through a variety of exercises designed to increase coordination, muscular strength and range of movement. A chair is available if needed for seated or standing support. Medicare Supplemental Insurance (Aetna, Humana, United) may pay costs. Cost is $3 for one class per week, $5 for any two classes per week or $6 for any three classes per week. FMI: 207-523-9055.

Beginners Strength and Balance Training: 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays (there will not be a class on Monday, May 30) with Linn Morin. Classes are designed to improve participants’ quality of life as they move to music while increasing strength and balance while standing or sitting. Cost is $3 for one class per week, $5 for any two classes per week or $6 for any three classes per week.
