The only Lewiston budget item that appeared unresolved in Thursday’s budget meeting was a proposal by Fire Chief Richard Mailhot, supported in City Administrator Robert Mulready’s proposal, to cut $120,000 from the fire department’s overtime budget and so sideline Snorkel 1 roughly half the days of the year. Ward 6 Councilor Lionel Potvin said a number of residents wish to voice their views about the issue, and encouraged them to attend the May 21 hearing at which the budget is scheduled to be adopted. At a meeting last month, Potvin and members of the firefighters’ union argued the move would imperil residents, particularly those in the tenement housing in Little Canada.
