AUBURN — The Androscoggin Land Trust is holding its first Great Falls Boats ‘n’ Brews River Race on Saturday, June 25, in conjunction with the Great Falls Brewfest.

The amateur competition is open to canoers, kayakers and paddleboarders. It will begin at 9:30 a.m. with a mass start just below the Great Falls. The race course is about 7 miles in length and will take competitors through downtown Lewiston’s historic canals, past the confluence with the Little Androscoggin River, and through Dresser Rips, which are Class II or Class III rapids, depending on water levels.

The race will finish at the Durham public boat launch on Route 136.

Prizes will be awarded to the top two finishers and for the best costumes in various categories.

Entry fees are $30 per adult and $15 per child age 12 and younger. Those registering by 5 p.m. on June 10 will receive a race packet which includes a T-shirt. One participant from each boat will receive free shuttle service from the Durham boat launch back to their car in Auburn.

Registrants 21 and older will receive a discount coupon for the Great Falls Brewfest.

Paddlers will put in at the Auburn public boat launch behind Festival Plaza. Race-day registration and check-in will be at Festival Plaza from 8 to 9 a.m. Parking is available nearby. Space on the shuttle may be limited, so racers are encouraged to place a vehicle at the Durham public boat lunch (not Durham Riverside Park) in advance of the race, if possible.

The public is invited to cheer on the participants. The start of the race can be viewed from Simard-Payne Memorial Park and Bonney Park in Lewiston and Auburn. The race can also be viewed along sections of Lincoln Street in Lewiston, and River Road/Route 136 in Auburn.
