To give you an idea of how well the Blue Devils (5-0) moved the ball, they scored 10 unassisted goals on the run, allowing them to march off with a 14-5 victory over winless Oxford Hills (0-4).
Olivia Bergeron was Lewiston’s sharpshooter, reeling off five goals. Kristina Blais dropped in another three goals and Julia St. Laurent and Erin Lachance each scored two. Dacia Bail and Tawni Zamrock added a goal each in the win for the Blue Devils.
Thanks to Lewiston’s passing game, the Blue Devils had no problem building a 7-3 lead by halftime.
“We came out and wanted to challenge the girls regardless of what (Oxford Hills’) record is. They were the best team on our schedule,” Lewiston coach Skip Capone said. “We came ready to play from start to finish. We played very well, much better than we have been on offense.
“We got a lot of really good shots. Their goalie played really well. It could have been a lot worse. I was happy we moved the ball defensively. For the most part, we were pretty solid, had a couple of lulls. The coach has always something to pick on.”
But Capone was impressed with Oxford Hills senior goaltender Samantha Bickford, who was under siege the entire afternoon and made an impressive 14 saves despite Lewiston’s withering 26 shots on net.
But Bickford took it all in stride.
“It’s a tough team,” Bickford said. “They are a competitive team, a tough team. They know where to place their shots. It’s part of the game — you win some, you lose some.”
In the first half, the Vikings gave the Blue Devils some concern when they scored three goals. Senior Hannah Hartnett scored a pair, with teammates Sydney Jackson, Haley Wakefield and Ally Hanley each scoring a goal. Hanley was also credited with two assists.
“They have always had a really good reputation for moving the ball very efficiently and effectively down the field,” Oxford Hills coach Jaimee Smith said. “They can do it in just a few passes. It is just impressive to watch, and they did really well moving the ball on us today.
“I felt there were times where we just weren’t aggressive enough to go after the ball. That kind of knocks us back on our heels. They played pretty well and they had a great opportunity to show those quick easy-transition passes. We have been working on that in practice so we will continue work on it next week so we can be ready for our game on Thursday.”
Lewiston goalies Kaylyn Labonte and Monica Field, who made total of six saves between them, shared the victory.
“Kaylyn Labonte and Monica Field — they are like our two-head monster,” Capone said. “They just split time. They are both excellent and there is not one better than the other. The kids love it; they love it. And if ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
