FARMINGTON — Regional School Unit 9 directors will give a proposed medical-marijuana-in-schools policy a second and final reading Tuesday.

The policy complies with a state law that went into effect last year to accommodate student attendance for children certified for the medical use of marijuana.

Several school districts have previously passed the policy, including Auburn and Winslow.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, at the Forum at Mt. Blue Campus.

Under the proposed policy, a parent or guardian would administer the medical marijuana in a non-smokeable form to the minor student on school property.

The person administrating the marijuana would have to provide the following:

• Documentation that he or she is the primary caregiver for the student;

• A copy of the student’s current written certification from a medical provider for use of medical marijuana;

• Documentation that the student needs to have the drug administered during the day, as opposed to before or after school; and

• A completed request form for parent/medical provider to administer marijuana at school.

The medical marijuana may only be possessed by the primary caregiver and only for the purpose of administering it to the student at school. The marijuana cannot be given to or held by any school employee, student or other person in school, with the exception of the qualifying patient.

The medical marijuana may be administered only at a supervised, designated area according to the student’s individual health plan or individual education plan.

The student may not possess medical marijuana at any time or place except during the time of its consumption and at the designated place under the supervision of the caregiver.
