Participants will hone observation and identification skills, learning about and gathering several different plants to combine into a yummy, zesty salad, which the group will eat with bread and butter. Cost is $10 per person with a $30 family cap.
Wooden Spoons Are Free From A Tree: 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 14.
This class begins around a fire where participants will use the tool of a hot coal to hollow out the bowl of the spoon, and then, after a lesson on wood grain and carving technique, will carve the handle and the outside of the spoon bowl. Participants may take home the spoons they make. The course is free.
Wild Greens for the Common Table: 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 15. Participants will learn about and search for local, edible plants such as trout lily, colt’s foot, chickweed, violet, dandelion, fiddleheads, knotweed, basswood, stinging nettle, lambs’ quarters, sorrel, burdock, Indian cucumber and cattail. The class culminates with open fire cooking and a three-course “wild” lunch. Plants are taught with an emphasis on observation skills that will enable participants to continue gathering on their own.
