100 years ago, 1916
Shots were fired in the region of Pine and Horton streets in Lewiston, early Friday morning. Several persons heard them, some placing the time as late as two a.m., others at an earlier hour. One party looked out to see two men walking rapidly down the street, another saw a rapidly moving automobile. The first deduction was that some police officer had taken a shot at some fugitive but it develops that no Information to this effect has been reported at police headquarters. Still another report says that the shots were heard further up the street, Thursday night, indicating that some party was indulging in promiscuous target practice throughout the night.

50 years ago, 1966
A dairy truck, stolen in Lewiston during the night. was reported recovered this morning before police were even aware it was missing According to authorities, the truck, property of the Oakhurst Dairy of Portland, was taken from a parking lot at Nault’s Esso Station at East Avenue and Lisbon Street and was recovered abandoned on the Brunswick-Bath Road. Police reported that an Oakhurst route man in Bath was notified that the truck was spotted on the highway. He in turn contacted local representatives of the dairy firm who then informed police of the theft.

25 years ago, 1991
Reservists of the 619th Transportation Company, Auburn, will return to the U.S. Thursday after serving six months in Saudi Arabia, where they ferried supplies to front-line troops during the Persian Gulf War. The unit is scheduled to leave Saudi Arabia Wednesday and will land Thursday at 12:45 p.m. at Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee, Mass., said Ray Sterling, family services coordinator for the 619th. After landing, the unit will be welcomed by families and area residents at a hangar that has been a welcoming area since the military began sending soldiers back to the U.S. from the Persian Gulf War.
