The Cancer Resource Center of Western Maine is located in Norway and would be very interested in her beads, fabric and other items. We have a sewing group that makes bonnets for cancer patients plus we offer a variety of activities, like beading classes, free of charge to people affected by cancer. We are a nonprofit organization  that takes materials businesses and homeowners no longer want and provide them to schools and other nonprofit organizations. DEAR SUN SPOTS: We are nearing the Memorial Day weekend, and I would like to remind your readers of the unveiling of our 28th memorial monument on the 28th of May at 10 a.m., a Saturday. I would urge the people who will attend to bring their own chairs, as we always run out of chairs.

This year, we are having a special guest to do the unveiling. Maj. Gen. Susan Y. Desjardins (ret.) will be doing the honors. Her father, Albert E. Desjardins, was a U.S. Marine in Korea, a recipient of the Silver Star, third highest honor for gallantry in action, including three Purple Hearts, and her mother, Ann Loring Desjardins, was a nurse in the Air Force. Then her older brother, Thomas Desjardins, is a captain in the U.S. Navy (active), and her younger sister Cheryl was in the U.S. Army. They will all be there, along with relatives.

This year we will be cutting the ribbon on a new walkway to the Gold Star Mothers area. The walkway will be completed this week. Also, if any group would like to participate in the parade, call Jerry DeWitt at (207) 783-4663 ext. 228 for further information. And if anyone would like to help put flags on the graves of veterans at St. Peter’s Cemetery on May 21, we can use your help. Call Jerry DeWitt, our chairman of the L/A Veterans Council.
