The Androscoggin County Humane Society calls attention to National Horse Day, May 20. Several hundred tags have been sent to the Humane Society and will be distributed by the agent. These tags are gotten out by the American Humane Education Society. The purpose of National Horse Day is to deepen public interest in the welfare of man’s most faithful servant, the horse, by having tags attached to the horse’s bridle. This movement is endorsed by the team owners associations of the country.

Officials said Monday it will be some time before two ball fields and the soccer field at Buckfield Junior-Senior High School will be repaired following extensive damage from an unknown vehicle over the weekend. Tires cut through newly seeded turf on all three fields and at the front entrance to the new school on Route 140, said Oxford County Sheriff’s Deputy Paul Reynolds, who is investigating the vandalism. Clumps of sod scattered around by a spinning full-size vehicle were repositioned Monday to allow scheduled games to take place. Reynolds said the vandal or vandals gained access to the fields by entering at a front driveway, going through a narrow opening behind the student parking lot and onto a chained-off dirt path to the fields.
