LEWISTON – Maine Campus Compact, a non-profit statewide membership coalition of 18 Maine colleges and universities, held its 15th annual Awards Ceremony at the State House Hall of Flags in Augusta on April 27.

The ceremony recognized the outstanding work in public service and civic engagement by Maine faculty members, students and campus departments and student organizations. State Rep. Margaret Rotundo gave opening remarks and President Glenn Cummings of the University of Southern Maine delivered the keynote address.

Three Maine professors were honored with the Donald Harward Faculty Award for Service-Learning Excellence, which recognizes outstanding faculty who integrate community or public service into the curriculum and who work to institutionalize service-learning. This year’s faculty awardees included: Dennis Gilbert, lecturer of Media Studies at the University of Southern Maine; Tora Johnson, assistant professor of Geographic Information Systems at the University of Maine at Machias; and Lisa Leduc, associate professor of Criminal Justice at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.

Six individuals were honored with the Heart and Soul Student Award, which recognizes outstanding students who demonstrate innovative approaches to building or enhancing campus-based efforts to address community issues and who demonstrate an ability to lead, inspire and engage other students and/or members of the institution.

Recipients included: Camden Bock and Matthew Gee from Bates College, Sarah Milkwoski-Dahlgren from the Maine College of Art, Catherine Dufault from the University of Maine at Farmington, Shannon Olson from the University of Maine at Machias, and Katie Zema from the University of Southern Maine.

Nine college/university organizations were honored with the President’s Campus Leadership Award, given to recognize exceptional contributions to community service, service-learning, and/or civic engagement efforts on their campus.

Recipients included the Department of Mathematics at Bates College, Colby Cares About Kids’ Student Advisory Board at Colby College, Student Government at Saint Joseph’s College, the Green Team at the University of Maine, the Food Security Coalition at the University of Maine at Augusta, the Environmental Recreation and Tourism Management Program at the University of Maine at Machias, the Business Program at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, the College Community Mentoring Club at the University of New England, and the American Sign Language Club at the University of Southern Maine.
