LEWISTON — Lewiston Middle School students in Barbara McManus’ Civil Rights Group were challenged in April to participate in the No Name Calling Poetry Contest.

Students were asked to write a poem addressing the issue of name-calling by students to other students in school.

The goal in writing the poems was to raise awareness that name-calling hurts people and affects their daily lives in school and at home. Raising awareness that name-calling can bring sadness and mistrust to others allowed these students an opportunity to express their own feelings as a result of being called names.

Winners of the contest were, first place, Nicholas Bolduc; second, Zamzam Elmoge; and third, Alivia Turner.
