100 years ago, 1916
Streamers of serpentine and bushels of confetti filled the air at Lewiston city hall, Thursday evening when the promenade concert of the Dominican band was enjoyed by nearly 2,000 people. This event, which is looked forward to as one of the most enjoyable of the annual concerts, was one of the best ever given by the Lewiston band. The concert also took the form of a bazaar, on one side of the hall were arranged booths where numerous amusements and refreshments would be found. These were in charge of the contestants in the St. Dominique society, it being the end of the contest between Landry and Pruneau and Groleau and Boucher, the former winning.
50 years ago, 1966
Several camping and other outdoor activities for Girl Scouts and their leaders from Dirigo Neighborhood are being planned for May and June, under the theme “Putting the ‘Outing’ in Scouting.” A cookout will highlight the Neighborhood meeting May 17 at the home of Mrs. Robert Dubuc, 1525 Main St., Lewiston. Miss Debbie Landry, who has been selected the New England representative to “Our Chalet” in Switzerland, and her mother, Mrs. Roger Landry, will attend as special guests and Miss Anita Ramsdell from Winthrop field representative, will be present.
25 years ago, 1991
There will be a dedication ceremony on Wednesday at the newly constructed Murch Ballfield on Patten Road, Greene. The field will be dedicated to Bert and Betty Murch who donated the land to be used for Greene Youth Athletics. The ceremony will be conducted by Greene Youth Athletic Association members John Belisle and Rachel Goulet. Bert Murch will throw the first pitch of the game to be played following the dedication by two baseball farm teams.
