Poland Seniors opening new center

POLAND — The Poland Seniors Club will hold the grand opening of the Poland Seniors Center at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, in the basement of the town hall.

There will be a short ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by the open house until 5 p.m. Representatives from the Board of Selectmen will be present along with state Sen. Eric Brakey, R-Auburn, state Rep. Ellie Espling, R-New Gloucester, and state Rep. Michael McClellan, R-Raymond, along with Androscoggin County Sheriff Eric Samson.

Light refreshments will be served.

Lincoln Day Dinner May 20

LEWISTON — The Androscoggin County Republican Committee will host the annual Lincoln Day Dinner and Auction on Friday, May 20, at The Dolard and Priscilla Gendron Franco Center.

Gov. Paul LePage and U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin will be in attendance, and there will be speakers throughout the evening. 

Doors open at 5 p.m. There will be live music, a cash bar and dinner at 6:45 p.m.

Tickets cost $40 each.

Kora Shriners screening clinic

The Kora Shriners will sponsor a screening clinic from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 21, at five central Maine locations for children in need of care for orthopaedic conditions, burn injuries, spinal cord injuries or cleft lips and palates.

The services are for children up to age 18. No appointments are necessary.

Archery introduction at Wildlife Park

GRAY — Ron Fournier will host a hands-on introduction to archery from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at Maine Wildlife Park on Route 26.

Fournier is a certified firearm and archery safety instructor for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and the University of Maine 4-H Camp & Learning Center in Bryant Pond.

Staff from the UMaine 4-H camp will set up targets, showcase a variety of bows and provide instruction.

Children who enjoy archery may consider attending Bryant Pond’s Junior Archery Camp for ages 8 to 11, which focuses on basic archery shooting.

Laser tag fundraiser for DMS

DIXFIELD — The eighth-grade class of Dirigo Middle School will hold a laser tag fundraiser from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday, May 22, at the school.

The cost is $20 per person for 2 hours of play. Proceeds from all tickets sold after the first 80 will benefit the class trip.

Workshop to discuss life insurance

AUBURN — The Corporate and Community Services Department at Central Maine Community College will offer a single-day workshop, Life Insurance: Term vs. Whole Life, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 1.

This workshop is the June edition of the Maine Money Academy, a low-cost monthly financial workshop being offered to the public. This course explains differences and nuances of term life and many types of permanent life insurance, such as whole life and equity indexed life.

Case studies will examine basic strategies to determine the right life insurance for different needs and situations. Each participant will generate a real life insurance quote, both term and permanent.

This class is open to the public. Registration for this course is open and ongoing, but space is limited. The cost is $19.  Deadline for registration is Friday, May 27.
