1923 – 2016
LEWISTON — Arline L. Small, 92, of Lisbon Falls peacefully passed away on Friday, May 13 at CMMC in Lewiston.
She was born on Aug. 11, 1923 in Bowdoin, daughter of the late Edward and Huldah (Harris) McIver. She grew up locally and attended area schools, graduating from Brunswick High School.
She met and married Joseph Small on Jan. 12, 1949 when they started a family together. Arline’s work career included Bath Iron Works during World War II, Rosenberg’s Department Store and Raytheon. Her favorite job was babysitting family members’ children for many years. She was a member of the Lisbon Falls United Methodist Church.
Arline will always be remembered for her love of spending quality time with her family and caring for them when needed. She also loved to dance, and play cards and different games. It is said that her home had a “revolving” door. People were always welcome and felt comfortable to spontaneously visit. Home cooked food was never lacking. She was the glue that kept her family bonded and will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her two children, George Garland and his wife, Elsie, of Sun Lakes, Ariz. and Lois Dziergowski and her husband, Ed, of Londonderry, N.H.; a sister, Eva Kacsmar and her husband, Frank, of Lisbon Falls; a sister-in-law, Ginny McIver of Bowdoin and a brother-in-law, Joe Ouellette of Shaker Heights, OH. She also leaves behind four grandchildren, Candace Chopra and her husband, Mandy, Patricia, Pamela and Paul Garland; four great-grandchildren, Joseph, Elizabeth, Grace and Julia Chopra; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Joseph Small in 2004; five brothers, Herbert, James, Russell, Leon and Ivan McIver; two sisters-in-law, Doris Horan along with her husband, Ernest and Violet Ouellette.
