LEWISTON — Laws Protecting Military Personnel and Families is the topic for the next workshop in the Lewiston Auburn Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce LA Law Series.

It will be presented from noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 26, in the chamber’s conference room, 415 Lisbon St., Lewiston. The public is invited.

Not only is it important that military-member employees understand their rights, private employers and business owners need to understand these rights as well. For example, employers with employees in the military, and/or have family members in the military, should take note of the obligations they may have in granting leaves of absence to those employees.

Attorney Sonia Buck, partner at Linnell, Choate & Webber, LLP, will discuss the importance of keeping accurate records. She will provide tips for employers who may want to revise employee handbooks and personnel policies to reflect laws protecting military employees and their families. She will also discuss other laws protecting military members and ways in which these laws might affect small business practices.

Matthew Collins, a volunteer with Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve, will explain that program and how it can be a resource to employers.

Registration is $25 for members and $50 for nonmembers and is available at www.LAMetroChamber.com. For questions, call 207-783-2249.
