Well, I didn’t plan on writing a letter to the editor this morning (Saturday, May 14), but the sports page gave me incentive. I am looking at the results of Telstar High School sports and realized that the game lost by the boys’ team got twice the headline size and coverage as the headline for the girls’ winning contest.
I am not exceptionally bothered by this, but it was a glaring difference. Picky, aren’t I?
My husband has taught at Telstar High School for 48 years and I like to follow softball games coached by his good friend and coach Jim Lunney. Lunney’s record is possibly unsurpassed in Maine softball coaching history. His girls win again, and the Sun Journal sports page shortchanges his team.
Having worked for the Sun Journal myself, I understand some of the reasons that happens, but that doesn’t make me like it. If the sports department is going to show inequality, at least put the stories on different pages and maybe I won’t notice next time.
