OXFORD — Legendary recording artist Charlie Daniels and his band will headline the entertainment at the 2016 Oxford County Fair when it opens this year from Sept. 14 through 17.

The 80-year-old Grammy Award-winning musician who has worked for more than 50 years and has sold more than $20 million in record sales, including “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” and “Long Haired Country Boy,” is set to play on the Pottle Street fairgrounds at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17.

Daniels, who formed a rock n’ roll band and hit the road in 1955, went on to record with Bob Dylan on Dylan’s 1969-70 “Nashville Skyline,” “New Morning,” and “Self Portrait” albums, according to his band’s website. Daniels produced the Youngbloods albums of 1969-70, “Elephant Mountain” and “Ride the Wind,” toured Europe with Leonard Cohen and performed on records with artists as different as Al Kooper, Pete Seeger and Ringo Starr.

Daniels recorded his own first record in 1973 with Honey in the Rock and its hit hippie song “Uneasy Rider.” His rebel anthems “Long Haired Country Boy” and “The South’s Gonna Do It” propelled his 1975 collection “Fire On the Mountain” to Double ?Platinum status, according to his website.

In 2008, Daniels’ lifelong dream became a reality when he was inducted as a full-fledged member into the Grand Ole Opry.

The Oxford County Fair is one of 44 venues the Charlie Daniels Band will play this season. He will be playing a gig in New York before coming up to Maine.
