Of the 500 graves at Evergreen Cemetery on Stevens Mill Road, Auburn, 55 belong to veterans, and it is only those 55 that will be maintained — at least for the time being. The City Council Monday evening voted unanimously to accept responsibility for mowing the grass on graves there of military veterans — as required by state statute — but the rest will not be taken care of. In the meantime, Mayor Richard Trafton, acting upon a request by Ward 2 Councilor Joseph Deschenes, is going to appoint a committee to help organize and finance continued maintenance of the remainder of the graves at Evergreen and at 17 other “neighborhood” cemeteries scattered throughout the city’s 65 square miles.
