1925 – 2016
SOUTH PARIS — Robert George of Mechanic Falls died peacefully Saturday, May 21, at the Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris.
Bob, born to Giles and Helen George on Jan. 14, 1925, with twin sister, Betty, grew up in Norway and Mechanic Falls. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. After discharge, he returned home and married Barbara Strout on Oct. 18, 1946, and lived in Mechanic Falls the remainder of his life until going to the Veterans’ Home in 2010.
Throughout his life, Bob worked as a barber, had various part-time jobs and worked at the Marcal Paper Mill in Mechanic Falls for many years. Bob was a hardworking, private man who was very caring and dedicated to his family. He took care of his wife, Barbara, who had multiple sclerosis for many years as well as his three children.
Surviving are his three children, Suzanne and husband, Michael Hillier, Gloria and husband, Patrick Conlon, and son, Andrew; and three grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Patty, who had cerebral palsy and died in 1958 at age 5; his wife, Barbara, who died in 1996; and his siblings, Betty Hackett, Barbara Davis, Thomas George and Richard George.
