AUGUSTA (AP) — An ex-Army Ranger charged in connection with a shooting incident in Shapleigh that sparked a standoff with police has been transferred to a holding unit for military veterans.

The Portland Press Herald reported (http://bit.ly/22pXsKy ) 26-year-old Robert Ferrera was transferred Wednesday from the York County Jail to the special unit at the Kennebec County Jail in Augusta.

The jail offers a program called the Incarcerated Veterans Initiative, which serves veterans diagnosed with service-related behavioral and medical conditions. Ferrera served two tours of duty in Afghanistan.

Ferrera was arrested Sunday after he allegedly fired an AK-47 semi-automatic rifle between 15 and 20 times at his family’s farm. He was charged with reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and a parole violation.

The jail has no records indicating whether Ferrera has a lawyer.
