LEWISTON — Central Maine Medical Center is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its volunteer patient representative program.
The program began in 1986 when the hospital looked to hear from patients about their experience while still hospitalized.
“If a patient was disappointed in care, we wanted to be able to fix things while they were still with us,” said President Tina Legere. “We also wanted to reinforce the good things we were doing when patients and families had compliments to share.”
The program was launched with four volunteers. In 30 years, there have been 40 volunteers. Thousands of patients and family members have offered thoughts and suggestions about their care.
Patient representatives spend time visiting patients, sitting at the bedside and hearing their stories.
The patients representatives come from many different backgrounds, but they all have the need to give back to the community in common.
“It’s an experience I cherish,” said Jackie Culina, who has been a volunteer in the ICU for 20 years.
“I love being a patient rep,” said Laura Cote. ”Knowing I can make a difference in a patient’s stay makes my day.”
