PHILLIPS — Phillips Historical Society is among the historical societies and museums in Franklin County that will open its doors for a history tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June 4.

Doors will be open at the following museums/historical societies: Jay, Rangeley, Stratton, Livermore Falls, Wilton, Farmington, Temple, Strong, Kingfield, New Portland, Madrid, New Vineyard, Phillips and Oquossoc.

Attendees can immerse themselves in Franklin County’s cultural and economic heritage. Up for viewing are items related to small-town baseball teams, Abenaki basketry, the paper-making and shoe industries, steam-powered automobiles, narrow gauge railroads, flooded settlements and sporting camps.

“While they are unique in their holdings, the societies and museums are also unique in the days and hours and months they are open during the year. That’s why we created the ‘one-day-we-are-all-open-at-the-same-time-history-tour’,” said Jane Stinchfield of the Phillips Historical Society.

Those interested can drop by their local historical society or museum and pick up a map and head out.

While it’s impossible to visit all of them, you can get a taste of a few and return during normal museum hours throughout the summer, Stinchfield suggests.
