NORWAY — Charles Warren Knapp, 80, of Gray and more recently of Hebron, passed away on Thursday, May 26, at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway.

Warren was born in Newton, Mass., to Charles and Elisabeth (Hall) Knapp on July 14, 1935. After completing school in Newton, he served in the U.S. Army as a radio operator and upon discharge moved to Gray. He taught music in an elementary school where he met Nellie Louise Morrell, whom he married on July 10, 1965, in Windham.

Warren then worked more than 30 years for the Maine Turnpike Authority, where he was known as “Charlie.” His love for music led him to sing in the choir of the First Congregational Church of Gray, as well as play the accordion for square dances locally and around New England and the Canadian Maritimes. He was also a school board member for Gray-New Gloucester. In retirement, he worked at the Shaker Village in Poland. An avid sports fan, he passionately followed the Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins and Celtics.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Louise; brother, Richard Hall Knapp; sons, Clifford and his wife, Cheryl, and Kenneth and his wife, Carrie. He has five grandchildren, Emma, Elisabeth, Caleb, Margaret and Joseph.

Warren is preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Elisabeth Knapp.
