WASHINGTON, D.C. — Ten high-achieving four-year college and university students were selected by the Maine State Society of Washington, D.C., Foundation to receive merit-based scholarships.

Bowdoin College junior Kristin K. Bishop of Waterville received the foundation’s top scholarship of $2,500.

University of Southern Maine senior Samantha Grant of Gorham received the $2,500 Marge Pearson Award.

Pearson, originally from Millinocket, was one of the founding members of the foundation. She died in November 2011.

Local winners of $1,000 were:

* Daniel Fortier of Lewiston, junior at the University of Maine;

* Sarah Holmes of Cumberland, senior at Bates College; and

* Audrey Puleio of Saco, junior at Bates College;
