TOGUS — Philip Amie Roy Sr., 92, of Lisbon Falls passed away peacefully at the Togus Veterans Administration Center on Friday, May 27.
He was born in Lisbon, a son of Alcide and Eleanor (Bouchard) Roy, and raised in Caribou. As the 20th of 22 children, he was the last to pass away.
As an Army Ranger, Philip survived the D-Day landings and a German POW camp. On his return to Lisbon Falls, he married Barbara Rioux in November 1945. His work in the community varied from part-time mail delivery to working in a local bakery, at a dry cleaners and a woolen mill, and as a supervisor and general contractor.
Philip opened a recreation center and later owned the local bowling alley, providing a safe haven for local youths. He was a dedicated John Wayne fan and enjoyed puzzles and games, especially cribbage, with friends and family.
On Dec. 18, 2014, the 70th anniversary of being captured during the Battle of the Bulge, Philip was awarded his high school diploma from Greely High School in Cumberland.
Phil is survived by his sons, Philip A. Roy Jr. of North Miami Beach, Fla., Ronald P. Roy of Mystic, Conn., Richard R. Roy of Topsham and Patrick A. Roy; his daughters, Barbara A. Dube of Lewiston, Theresa A. Ellis of Clayton, N.C. and Linda J. Roy of Lewiston. He was also blessed with 15 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Barbara Anne Roy.
The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the doctors and staff at Patriots Place in Togus for their wonderful care and compassion. We will always remember your gentle touch and caring words.
