AUBURN — The Auburn Public Library has announced two upcoming book group meetings for the month of June.
The Auburn Page Turners will discuss “Rush Oh” by Shirley Barrett at 1 p.m. Monday, June 6.
The book tells of whaling in the waters of Twofold Bay, on the south coast of New South Wales, Australia, in the late 19th century and into the 20th. This historical period is chronicled with a focus on the famous whaleman George “Fearless” Davidson and his family.
The Pickwick Club, Maine’s Dickens and Victorian era discussion group, will meet from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 25. They will discuss “The Victorian City” by Judith Flanders.
From the moment Dickens arrived in London in 1822, he obsessively walked its streets, recording its pleasures, curiosities and cruelties. To reveal the Victorian capital in all its variety, vibrancy and squalor, Flanders leads readers through the markets, transport systems, sewers, rivers, slums, alleys, cemeteries, gin palaces, chop houses and entertain emporia of Dickens.
Copies of both books may be acquired through interlibrary loan, which is free for cardholders.
