1937 – 2016
PORTLAND — Betty Carol Abbott, 79, of Abbott Farm Road, Gorham, passed away Wednesday, June 1, at the Maine Medical Center.
She was born in Phillips on March 10, 1937, the daughter of Clyde and Hildred Dunham Abbott.
She graduated from New Sharon schools.
She did a number of factory jobs, attended and graduated from Una’s Beauty School in Skowhegan, but when her back and joint pain prevented her from doing those jobs, she would continue to work as a companion for many years. Her last job was as a courier for FISC.
Betty lived in the Lewiston/Auburn area first with her two sons and then with her good friend, Charlotte Varney. After Charlotte’s passing, she purchased a trailer in Turner and then spent her last years living with her daughter-in-law and grandchildren in Gorham.
Betty’s joys included karaoke, playing cards and various games with family and friends, trying her luck with horses, scratch/lottery tickets and slots. She loved to make handcrafted gifts and cuddling with her two fur babies, Sadie and Bugsy.
Betty was a kind, sweet and loving person who worked hard, laughed harder, and made the most out of life. She never had a lot in life, but she always gave more than she had.
She is survived by a son, Ronald Abbott of Lisbon; and a brother, Rodger Lee Abbott of New Sharon; and her favorite Aunt Ella Wilbur of Avon; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She is predeceased by a son, Rodney “Rocky” Abbott in 1992; and her two sisters, Glenda and Margie.
