Jonas Edwards of Auburn died Wednesday afternoon from a fractured skull received in a runaway accident that noon. Mr. Edwards, one of Auburn’s most prominent and influential citizens, was seriously injured when he was thrown from a carriage on Spring street. He was showing one of his horses to an out-of-town customer. As they were driving over Spring street onto Hampshire street, a shifting engine passed the crossing, frightening the horse. The animal then started toward Court street, Mr. Edwards losing control of the horse. The breeching broke and this further frightened the horse. As it ran the wagon was thrown against a tree opposite the Webster grammar school and as it struck the curbing both occupants were thrown out. Mr. Edwards, who was riding on the left side, was thrown over the other man, striking on his head. The other occupant suffered only bruises.

Roller hockey, which was a popular spectator sport in Lewiston over 30 years ago, is making its return to the local scene tomorrow night. The first public games of the recently formed local roller hockey loop will take place at the Central Maine Youth Center, according to Henry Bernier, spokesman for the committee that recently organized the loop. When this sport was presented here at the old Beacon Hall and at Lewiston City Hall some 30 years ago, it was known as “roller polo.”

The Chick-A-Dee Restaurant, a thriving business in Turner for 56 years, burned to the ground early Friday morning. Firefighters saw flames pouring from the windows of the restaurant along Route 4 when they arrived about 2 a.m., Fire Chief Laurence Gagne said. It was too late to save the restaurant, he said, but they were able to prevent the flames from spreading to a nearby home and garage. The fire was reported at 1:51 a.m. by a northbound trucker who saw flames shooting from windows of the restaurant, just north of the Auburn city line. The trucker found a public phone and called for help, Gagne said. “It was beyond putting out when we got there.”
