An environmental education program unique to the Lewiston-Auburn public school systems has recently received national recognition for excellence. Naturalist-in-the-Classroom has been selected to receive the Search for Success Award from Renew America, a non-profit organization based in Washington D.C. that compiles and disseminates information on solutions to America’s environmental problems. Naturalist-in-the-Classroom was
initiated in 1987 by Susan Hayward, naturalist at Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary, and Susan Martin, principal at Farwell School in Lewiston, as an innovative grant from the Maine State Department of Education. This program provides natural history education to all fourth-graders in the city, using teacher training, classroom time and three seasonal field trips to Thorncrag. Food webs, pond studies and winter tracking and adaptation are among the topics discussed.
