AUGUSTA — Retired U.S. Navy Commander John T. Dube, BTC, and eight members of the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association met with Gov. Paul LePage on June 2 to sign the proclamation recognizing the third Saturday of June as Destroyer Escort Day in the state.

The North East Chapter, which was chartered in October 1996, has gathered at the State House every year since 1998. In 2001, the Legislature passed an Act to Establish Destroyer Escort Day, which was approved and signed into law by then-Gov. Angus King on April 3.

The Destroyer Escort Sailors Association will hold its annual memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 18, at Veterans Memorial Park, located at the corner of Main and Lincoln streets in Lewiston. The group will honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice during World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Cold War. It will also honor all fallen comrades of the North East Chapter since its inception. The public is invited.
