NORWAY — United Way of Oxford County, United Way of Mid-Maine, and United Way of the Tri-Valley Area have announced the first annual Diaper Drive from June 21 to July 1.
Participating businesses across Oxford, Somerset and Franklin counties will be collecting donations of unopened diapers of all sizes, as well as baby wipes.
Newborns can use up to 12 diapers a day — over 4,000 diapers a year. Diapers can cost up to $1,000 per year per child.
For a parent earning Maine’s minimum wage of $7.50 per hour — $15,600 per year — that’s over 6 percent of their annual income.
Twenty-three percent of children in Oxford County live in poverty. Many families struggle to provide their babies with enough fresh clean diapers. Not having enough clean diapers can lead to diaper rash, illness, infection and a baby that cries a lot.
The three United Ways are collaborating to organize the Diaper Drive to help ensure families have enough clean diapers to keep their babies dry, clean and healthy.
