LISBON FALLS — Twelve master gardener volunteers received certificates and engraved name badges at a certification ceremony June 7 at the University of Maine Cooperative Extension office, 24 Main St.
The newly certified master gardener volunteers completed 14 weeks of intensive horticulture training in the spring of 2015, followed by a minimum of 40 volunteer hours on gardening projects in the community. Training by UMaine Extension experts included basic soil science, composting, botany, volunteerism, and fruit and vegetable production. Volunteer projects included work on the Dempsey Center Community Garden, Whiting Farm Children’s Garden, Topsham Public Library’s Edible Forest Garden, and the Durham Community School’s Garden.
Master gardener volunteer training is offered in Androscoggin and Sagadahoc counties each spring. Applications are available online in November and reviewed in early February. The cost for accepted applicants is $220; limited financial assistance is available.
