SOUTH PORTLAND — A South Portland home was destroyed by a massive fire Friday morning. Officials say three people inside the home made it out safely.
Officials are trying to figure out how the fire started.
The entire front of the home is charred at 73 Crestview Drive. Officials say it is a total loss.
When crews arrived around 10 a.m. they say the front of the house was fully engulfed and too dangerous for anyone to go inside.
They say it was a fast-moving fire, but three people inside were able to make it out before crews arrived.
Officials say there were working smoke detectors that woke up someone who was sleeping inside.
Witnesses say they’ve never seen anything like it. “Just tons of smoke and flames, the whole house was just covered in fire and it was pretty crazy,” Ellie Krigman, witness, said.
“There was a point where it was all the smoke was white, white and then it started getting dark and then, like, flames burst open through the roof everywhere and you could feel it,” Chelsea St. Pierre, witness, said.
Officials say one firefighter was brought to the hospital for a cut on his hand, which he sustained while breaking through a window.
CBS 13 reached out to the homeowner. She declined to speak with us but did say they are okay.
