A motorcycle race and three horse races have been added to the program for the afternoon sports at the Fair Grounds, July Fourth. Announcement to that effect, together with the discussion of plans to raise additional funds following a decision to charge no admission to the Fair Grounds, took up the time of the finance committee when they met at the Municipal Court room, last evening.
50 years ago, 1966
Fisherman’s luck paid off handsomely for the Lewiston-Auburn Children’s Home this weekend. The fisherman was young Gordan Flanzbaum and his catch made on a deep sea fishing trip with his father, was an 80-pound halibut, which the boy presented to the home.
25 years ago, 1991
Farmington selectmen quickly approved a proposed no-parking ban affecting downtown Farmington Wednesday as virtually no citizen opposition surfaced to prevent passage at a public hearing. Noting that town officials outnumbered the towns-people present, Peter Tracy, chairman of the Board of Selectmen, read a letter from the Downtown Business and Professional Association supporting the proposed ban. Betty Jespersen said that people living in the affected areas found it inconvenient to scramble for off-street parking in the winter. “Now they have to do that during the summer as well.” ‘Farmington Police Chief Nolan Wilcox said there are plenty of nearby parking lots available for those needing them.
