1925 – 2016

SOUTH PARIS — Frederick H. Gage, 90, passed away at the Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris on Saturday, June 18.

He was born in Strong on Sept. 28, 1925, the son of the late Leon and Florence (Luce) Gage.

Frederick graduated from Strong High School in 1943 as his class valedictorian. After graduating, he entered the U.S. Navy where he served 2½ years. He was a student at Boston University and graduated in 1950. On Sept. 3, 1949, Frederick married the love of his life, Carolyn Lois Mitchell, and they shared a loving marriage of almost 67 years.

He worked for the Wilton Times, and then he was the news and sports director for WLAM for many years. He was also the sports editor of the Lewiston Evening Journal and retired from the sports department of the Lewiston Sun Journal in 1990, but continued writing a horse racing column. He was a longtime member of the National Amateur Press Association, serving as the only Maine president from 1992 to 1993. He was also a member of UCT, Summit Springs Golf Course, and the Strong American Legion Johnson-Cox Post No. 78. In 1998, Frederick was inducted into the LA Sports Hall of Fame. Anyone who knew Freddie knew that he was an avid New York Yankees fan. In his spare time, he enjoyed his hobby as a printer and enjoyed spending time at camp with his family.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; daughters, Debra and her husband, John Neuschwanger, and Karen and her husband, Nelson Lavoie; grandchildren, Tara Neuschwanger and her partner, Eric Fickett, Kris Neuschwanger Labelle and her husband, Justin; step-grandchildren, Crystal Lavoie Johnson, Jeff Lavoie and his wife, Tanya; numerous great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Robert and his wife, Vincenta, and Alden and his wife, Lois.
