Waterford July 4 festivities

WATERFORD — The kickoff to the 63rd year of Waterford Summer Breakfasts gets underway on Monday, July 4, at the Wilkins Community House on Plummer Hill Road.

Festivities include breakfast from 7:30 to 10 a.m. and a parade at 11 a.m., featuring summer camps, town vehicles and veterans. There will also be a book sale at the Waterford Library from 9 a.m. to noon. 

An indoor yard sale will be held in the basement of the Wilkins Community House from 7:30 to 11 a.m. Proceeds benefit the maintenance funds for the Wilkins Community House and the Waterford Congregational Church.

Socrates Cafe discussing past, future

WATERFORD — The Socrates Cafe will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, July 11, at the Waterford Library. There will be not be a meeting MondayJuly 4.

The discussion topic will be 80/80 Visions: Contrast American life 80 years ago with today and contemplate what it may be 80 years from now.

Robert Casimiro will serve as moderator.

Light refreshments will be provided.

Knitting Guild to meet

PARIS — The Western Maine Knitting Guild will meet at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 5, at First Congregational Church, East Main Street.

Members will carpool to Jane Williams’ camp in Waterford. Members should bring their own sandwich or food to grill, a bathing suit, something to share and cowls for the fair exhibit.

New members are always welcome.

Program to celebrate Shakespeare

PARIS — The Paris Public Library is hosting the Zany Majestic Bard at 6:30 pm. Tuesday, July 5.

Presenting the program will be David Greenham, adjunct professor of drama at the University of Maine at Augusta.

The program celebrates William Shakespeare, his inventive language, and his ability to touch all audiences with his plays. Many words used today were first coined by Shakespeare.

The Zany Majestic Bard is a one-hour performance lecture designed for all ages. The program includes history, a brief guide on how to read and understand Shakespeare’s writings and the opportunity to hear Shakespeare performed.

Free breakfast, lunch for kids 

PARIS — Breakfast and lunch this summer will be served at the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School and Paris Elementary School to all children ages 18 and younger for free.

Paris Elementary: 8 to 9 a.m. breakfast, and noon to 1 p.m. lunch, Monday through Friday, June 20 to July 1, and from July 11 to Aug. 5.

Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School: 7:30 to 8 a.m. breakfast, and from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. lunch Monday through Friday.

Bridge club lists results

OXFORD — Oxford Hills Duplicate bridge club met June 17 where an 11 table Club Championship Mitchell movement was enjoyed.

Finishing first in flight A N/S were Mike Newsom and Misha Tomic; second, Claire Lyons and Les Buzzell; third, Leslie Lord and Pat Quinn; and fourth, Barbara Newcomb and Nancy Farmer. Finishing first in flight B N/S were Paul Clement and Richard Balian; second, Cynthia and Bill Clifford Jr.; third, Marlee Turner and Dave Kallander, also first in flight C; and fourth, Cindy and Bob Kirchherr, also second in flight C.

Finishing first in flight A E/W were Marty Round and Martha Thurlow, also first in flight B; second, Neanis Kivus and David Lock; third, Hazel Glazier and Marta Clements; and fourth, Marjorie Levesque and Barbara Vanderzanden, also second in flight B and first in flight C. Third in B were Carol Correard and Denise Whitley, also second in flight C; fourth in B, B.J. and Steve Cavicchi, also third in flight C; and fourth in C, Martha Cunningham and Linda Smith.

Oxford Hills Duplicate Bridge Club games are played at 9:15 a.m. on Fridays at the Oxford Recreation Center. All bridge players may attend, and a partner is guaranteed.
